Frequently Asked Questions

Platinum Wedding Ring Questions

What is platinum?
Platinum is one of the three precious metals - gold, silver and platinum. Because it takes an extremely high temperature to melt platinum, most platinum jewellery dates from after the 1920's.

The platinum rings available from Buy Rings Direct are 95% pure platinum and 5% copper.

Why is platinum more expensive than other metals?
Platinum is the rarest and therefore the most valuable of the precious metals.

Which is harder - platinum or gold?
Gold is harder than platinum because it has a greater proportion of other metals in the alloy whereas platinum is 95% pure which is to British hallmark standard. Platinum is soft but very dense. It is noticeably heavier than the other precious metals.

Can I put a platinum wedding band next to a white gold engagement ring?
You can, but there may be a noticeable difference in colour, especially if the engagement ring is not plated with rhodium, a member of the platinum family, to make it a bright white colour. Also, over a number of years, the heavier platinum may wear away at the lighter 18ct gold ring.
